Put an Optician in your crystal colony, (which is where I have my workshop):

1) It reduces the crystal cost of unit and ship upgrades.

2) It reduces the crystal needed in 'experiments' in the Academy.

3) Later in the game you can delete it; or keep it since it also reduces the crystal cost of Doctors and Diving Boats.
